Geo Logica starts 2025 announcing its first professional field-based training course abroad together with Oscar Fernandez from Vienna University.
This course entitled “SALT TECTONICS IN CENTRAL NORTHERN CALCAREOUS ALPS (SALZBURG REGION, AUSTRIA)” will focus on salt tectonics in rifts, passive margins and in fold-and-thrust belts while understanding the influence of halokinesis on carbonate systems and deformation of layered evaporite sequences.
This 4 day field course will take place in the Salzburg Region (Austria) between September, 8 -12th 2025 and explores the role of salt tectonics along the Wilson cycle: from rift to passive-margin and from passive margin to orogenesis. We will detail the control of salt tectonics on syn-tectonic carbonate despositional systems, and the feedback sedimentary depocenters exert on the developing salt structures.
Historically this region has been an important salt mining province since the Bronze Age. Throughout millennia, salt has played a central role in the region's economy, culture, politics and even religion. With Hallstatt in its centre, many dissolution mining breakthroughs and the understanding of geological processes associated with salt have been established and developed here, and therefore is an excellent training ground to further understand salt tectonic processes.
The composition of the salt unit is explored at multiple locations, including in the world-famous Hallstatt salt mine. The relationship between heterogeneities in the evaporite unit and tectonic evolution will be discussed, and in turn its impact on the production of salt through dissolution mining.
The aim of the field trip is to provide insights into the development of supra-salt stratigraphy in passive margin and fold-and-thrust belt settings, and on the relevance of structural evolution on the distribution of intra-salt heterogeneities.
Full field trip details, including itinerary, cost, discounts and registration details are available here: https://www.geologica.xyz/salt-course-austria
(Limited to 12 participants and reservations will be on a first come, first served basis.)
It is a great pleasure to announce that this training course is now part of Geo Logica portfolio of field-based professional courses available for 2025. Find more info about all available courses for this year here: https://www.geologica.xyz/geotraining
